What Causes Balance Issues in Older Adults?

Schedule a Tour

Balance issues can be a real problem for older adults as they age. Regardless of the cause, it is important to treat balance issues properly to avoid serious injury or illness and maintain a good lifestyle.

Some factors contributing to balance issues range from circulation problems, neurological conditions, low iron levels, vision-related problems, chronic conditions, Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo (BPPV), and labyrinthitis.

This blog post will explore the various causes of balance issues in older adults and how they can affect their daily lives.

Causes Balance Issues in Older Adults?

Lack of Circulation

Poor circulation often leads to dizziness and imbalance. When the body does not get enough oxygen-rich blood, it can cause a feeling of lightheadedness or dizziness, leading to disorientation and difficulty maintaining balance.

Neurological Conditions

Neurological conditions, such as Parkinson’s Disease and Multiple Sclerosis, can affect balance due to their effect on the nervous system. These conditions can cause weakness or numbness in the limbs, making it difficult for a person to maintain balance.

Low Iron Levels

Low iron levels or anemia can lead to fatigue, lightheadedness, and dizziness, making it difficult for someone to maintain their balance. Iron is an essential mineral our bodies need for proper functioning, so if your iron levels are low, it could be causing your balance issues.

Vision-Related Problems

Poor vision or vision problems such as cataracts, glaucoma, or macular degeneration can all affect your ability to maintain your balance as they make it difficult for you to see obstacles in front of you or judge distances correctly, which may result in stumbling or falling.

Chronic Conditions

Chronic conditions such as diabetes, heart disease, and chronic pain can all contribute to imbalance due to side effects such as fatigue, pain, or weakness in the limbs, which may make it harder for someone to maintain their balance when standing up or walking around.

Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo (BPPV)

BPPV is a condition where particles called “crystals” become dislodged from the inner ear’s balancing mechanism, causing sudden vertigo when moving your head quickly from one position to another. It can make it harder for someone with BPPV to maintain their balance when walking around or standing up suddenly after sitting down for long periods.

Labyrinthitis

Labyrinthitis is an inflammation of the inner ear which affects equilibrium making it more difficult for someone with labyrinthitis to keep their balance while walking around or standing up after sitting down for extended periods.
